Bands on Sunday

Dark Town Strutters

Hot Swing jazz from the 1930s and 40s.

The lyrical swing and syncopation of classic American Swing meets the rhythmic pulse of French Gypsy jazz. The Darktown Strutters feed your soul with uptempo goodtime swing music and heartbreakingly blue ballads. The quartet can be seen regularly in their home city of Cork, and have featured in the Cork Jazz Festival for several years running. The band has also played all around Ireland and Europe.

Gary Baus (USA, alto saxophone), Bren Ó Ruaidh (jazz guitar), Pat Barrett (double bass) and Niall Dennehy (drums).

Downtown Dixieland Band – Limerick

Downtown Dixieland Band formed in 2007. Played its first public gig in Boston during that year’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Band formed along the traditional 7-piece Dixieland band lineup: 4 Horns [Trumpet, Clarinet, Trombone/Euphonium, Tenor Saxophone], Guitar/Banjo, Bass, Drums

Downtown Dixieland band plays the original arrangements of well-known and not-so-well-known standards from the traditional jazz repertoire of the 1920s straight through to the advent of the Big Band sound of the 1950s. The Band’s own repertoire – which is continually expanding – stands currently at 175 tunes [e.g. Down by the Riverside, Creole Jazz, Trouble in Mind, Tin Roof Blues, Bourbon St. Parade, When the Saints, High Society, On the Sunny Side of the Street…]

Dixieland Jazz (aka Tradjazz, New Orleans Jazz) is a very rhythmic, uplifting type of music which was the precursor of ‘swing’ music. The Downtown Dixieland band continues this tradition of playing ‘feel-good’ music that always gets the punters tapping their feet or singing/dancing along to the infectious beat.

To date the Band has limited its playing to Jazz Festivals (e.g. Cork Jazz Festival, Doonbeg Jazz Festival – where it was voted band of the festival on three occasions), and both private and corporate functions, such as Wedding Anniversaries, Birthdays, Press Receptions, Book Launches etc.

In the past year, the Band has widened its ‘playing out’ area to include pubs, hotels, street recitals and arrival receptions at weddings.

Downtown Dixieland Band is also called upon regularly to perform at charitable functions and fundraising events in Limerick City and its environs.

Skazz – Ireland

This five piece are the embodiment of the ska movement starting out as a swing and jazz outfit and converting in early 2007 to pure ska vibes. In keeping with their jazz roots, Skazz have chosen the original Jamaican scene Ska of the 1960s – when Caribbean mento and calypso first met American jazz and rhythm and blues. Fans of the 2 Tone sound of the late 1970s will feel at home on the dancefloor with the added bonus of an education in pre-reggae/rocksteady tempos and cross rhythms.

Having already shared stages with the likes of The Skatalites, Prince Buster, The Pioneers, Syramip, Dennis Alcapone, Winston Francis and Delroy Williams, and with dates this year including the Cork Jazz Festival, Electric Picnic and Waterford Spraoi and Bray Jazz Festival, this promises to be a very special band.
